Safety in Construction Industry Begins With Designers

Designers play a crucial role when it comes to improving the safety of construction industry. They have now been invited by the HSE to attend a seminar named designer safety awareness day to study means by which they can contribute towards reducing the risks faced by workers. A key objective of the seminar is to guide designers about the safety standards that they are expected to meet.

Today, the construction industry with 2.2 million workers is the largest industry in Britain. The problem however is that it is one of the most dangerous industries as well.

The seminar will be held at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire on 21st May. Designers have been invited for this event after concerns were raised that sufficient inputs are not provided by them to eliminate or reduce the risks.

The HSE is of the opinion that if risks are identified at an early stage, many of the problems faced by contractors can be reduced. This will also help reduce the costs incurred in changing the structure later on in the construction stage.

Health and Safety Awareness Officer, Cheryl Eeles said that designers can help reduce the injury rate and ill health of workers. She also stated that safe working practices result not just in the reduction of workers’ suffering, but also help in improving efficiency, professionalism and pride. A good designer can help achieve all this. Along with the HSE, the seminar will also see contributions from professional associations.

Working Well Together (WWT), which is a cross industry partnership, will be completing its ten years in May, and the seminar will mark this event. The partnership aims to improve the health and safety standards across industries.

All staff and management must be fully aware of and comply with health and safety regulations as laid down by law. Find out about the wide range of health and safety and redundancy training available from the experts at Workplace Law Training.
