Exciting times for tennis players even the ones stuck in the snow. Who do you see winning the Aussie Open in 2010, lasting favorites; Federer, Nadal or perhaps Murray. Or perhaps an upset from a tennis player who is just doing better than the balance right now like Del Potro, Roddick or perhaps Djokovic?
On the Women’s Side it could be any one of a number of likely tennis players: Henin, Venus Williams, Serena Williams, maybe Safina, Clijsters, Jankovic or everyone’s hopeful Ana Ivanovic. Day 1 results are already in and Maria Sharapova has already been bounced from the tourney by her countrywomen Maria Kirilenko.
All we really know is that there will be some great tennis, some long-term memories and the inner want for ourselves to get out on the courts and play.
Here’s some Day 1 Results:
Former top-ranked Maria Sharapova was a surprise 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4 loser Monday to fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko.
U.S. Open champion Clijsters, also a former No. 1 and making a return to the Aussie Open in her sixth tournament back from retirement, easily won her first-round match 6-0, 6-4 over Canadian qualifier Valerie Tetreault.
Later Monday, another former No. 1 also on the comeback trail, seven-time Grand Slam singles winner Henin, advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 win over fellow Belgian Kirsten Flipkens. Henin lost to Clijsters in the Brisbane International final 10 days ago in her return to the tour.
In between rain delays, No. 11-seeded Fernando Gonzalez of Chile beat Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 and Florian Mayer had an impressive comeback to beat Philipp Petzschner 0-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 6-2.
No. 24 Ivan Ljubicic had a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 win over 16-year-old wild card entry Jason Kubler, the youngest player in the draw.
