Google Talk Reviewed

So you’re sick and tired of AOL Instant Messenger. You’re looking for something fresh and new that will just work. Well Google feels the same way. On Wednesday August 24th they released their version of AIM, Google Talk.

Although Google Talk and AIM do basically the same thing, Google Talk is very different. For starters anyone can join AIM, in order to use Google Talk you need to have a Gmail account. AIM will also let you make a profile, Google Talk you can’t. However there are more features on Google Talk that are left out in AIM.

Google Talk’s main feature is being able to call friends that are on your list. Call means being able to talk through a microphone to them and they respond through theirs, much like the service Skype. There is a similar feature in the current version of AIM; however it’s not as easy to use.

Let’s say you’re talking to someone in the conversation window. You decide that this conversation would work a lot better over the phone. Well don’t get up and dial a number, simply plug in the microphone and headphones and guess what you’re connected, just like a phone. All you have to do is press the “Call” button in the window, you’ll hear a dial tone, and when the other user accepts you’re connected.

At the top of the window, when call is activated, you’ll see a volume meter for your friend and one for you. All it takes is a click of a button, how easy is that?

The other easy thing about Google Talk is the simplicity behind making a customized message. When you’re online you’ll have a small snippet under your name. You can customize that to whatever you want, that could be considered somewhat of a profile. You can also see peoples’ away messages right under their name. Making an away message is just as simple as changing the text under your name. Just go to the drop down list under your name in the window (not the friends list) and go to the “Custom Message” with the red circle next to it.

Google has also added a feature to make it easier to sign up for the service. When you select to add a friend you can insert an email address that isn’t a Gmail one. All it does is email the person letting them know about the service and offering a download link. This makes it really easy to convince your friends to make the switch.

Another feature that is greatly appreciated in Google Talk is the way it works directly with Gmail. You can add people on your contacts to the service within the Google Talk interface, plus it will notify you when a new email has been received. You can also go directly to your Gmail inbox via a link from the interface.

This next feature won’t mean much to the average user, but to some misfortunate geeks with low RAM it may. Google Talk consumes around 3MB of RAM. AOL Instant Messenger takes around 9MB. If you have a lot of other programs open and you can’t afford to waste RAM Google Talk will work great.

Google Talk is also much cleaner looking than AIM. There are no ads and no added crap like a stock ticker or news ticker. However the one thing that I’d like to see in Google Talk is notifications that tell you when someone logs on or off. This feature has been available in AIM for about 2 years.

There some other things that could be enhanced. In the settings menu I’d like to see a setting to customize how often it checks the Gmail mailbox, customize sounds, and more customization for notifications.

Staying on the topic of customization I’d like to see, in later versions, the option to add categories in your friends list. Something so you could put all your family under one list, friends under the others and so on.

Overall I wouldn’t rush out and download Google Talk quite yet. Right now I’d think that it would be more convenient to corporations so that employees can interact with each other. It won’t take down AIM, because AIM is just too popular, but it might steal some Yahoo! Messenger or MSN users.

5 Features to Look For in Web Hosting

I develop web sites for friends and small businesses. I don’t provide hosting but I am always asked how to identify a good web hosting company. There are 5 “must have” features in quality web hosting. They are:

1. 24/7 live support. Phone support is the best option but it is a bonus to find a web hosting company that provides 24/7 live chat support along with phone support. Many times things you think are big issues can be resolved in a matter of minutes and it’s nice not to be on hold.

2. 30 day money back guarantee. If a company believes in its service and products, they will not be reluctant to offer a full money back guarantee. In fact, I would be skeptical of a company that doesn’t offer some kind of guarantee. Make sure that you read the details of the guarantee.

3. Windows and Linux hosting at comparable prices. Some hosting companies will offer both Linux and Windows web hosting but some will charge much more for one or the other. A good hosting company will rarely have more than a few dollars difference in the price of these options.

4. Shared SSL. This is absolutely necessary if you want any e-commerce capabilities. SSL is what provides your customers with a secure connection to enter credit card information, etc. Some hosting companies will charge for this but the good ones will always have shared SSL free of charge.

5. Free setup. Some companies will charge for setup. This charge is anywhere from $20-$50. This is such a bogus charge because most web hosting companies have this process completely automated and in many cases nothing manual has to be done. So in reality you are paying this charge for absolutely nothing!

Of course, there are many other important things to look for in web hosting but many of them really depend on your needs. It should be very easy to find a reputable web hosting company that offers these 5 things. Web hosting is a very saturated market which is great for the consumer. The key is to take your time. Don’t forget that many of these companies will register your domain name for free if you sign up for a hosting account with them.

Website Sales: Discover 10 Mesmerizing Insider’s Tricks To Ignite Your Sales

Marketing is not an easy skill to acquire.

It requires patience and a lot of efforts in conducting many
tests and improvement to get it right.

Below are 10 mesmerizing website sales tricks to spark up
your sales and put a smile on your face.

1. Specialize your product or service if you have too
much competition. If you’re selling an advertising book,
rewrite part of it and target it just to pet businesses.

2. Sell a lead in product for super cheap, even if
you loose a little money. If people like it, you have
a greater chance to sell your higher price product.

3. Give people a free version of your product. If
it does what you say they, will pay for the up-grade
or deluxe version to get more benefits.

4. Ask your visitors outcome questions in your
ad copy like: “Where do you want to be financially
the next two years?” This’ll persuade them to buy.

5. Give your product away for free to people that
will agree to influence your target audience to buy it.
It could be experts, famous athletes, actors, etc.

6. Give your potential customers a bonus that will
actually pay for their purchase. It could be money
saving coupons, an affiliate program, etc.

7. Make your sales letters or ads sound like it is
common sense to buy your product. For example:
“Everyone knows you can’t make money…”

8. Make sure your ad copy sounds like you know
what you’re talking about. If people sense you or
your business doesn’t, they won’t buy.

9. Load your ad copy up with tons of benefits and
bonuses. People will think and feel like they are
getting a lot for their money if they buy.

10. Assume your potential customer is going to
buy. For example: “Dear Future Millionaire”. They
will want to buy in order to feel that way.

May these website sales secrets help you to make a lot
of money.

Warmly,

Don’t Feed the Trolls

What is a troll? He is a hairy, ugly creature that lives under a bridge. Yet, there is another kind of troll; this troll is a forum group poster who makes a post that is controversial or an outright lie to provoke readers into a flame war. Every time I read a troll’s post I think “Liar, liar, pants on fire.” Sometimes I just want to scream that from the top of my lungs. What is it that makes people twist the truth to justify their own needs? The story keeps changing or the trolls say things that just don’t add up.

Why is it people can’t mind their own business. I swear that some people just want disruption and chaos. I swear they live for it. Why do they get enjoyment out of harassing people? People like this have one sole purpose and that is to create a “Flame War,” where a bunch of people are all having their say about a person or a sensitive topic. This benefits only them, so they post lies about good honest people.

They feel by baiting the topic, they will lure you in, where the group of them can pounce on you as soon as you post. Soon your name gets Googled and you are labeled a horrible person. Scam sites are popping up all over the net and instead of them posting actual statements about scams; they are posting anything and everything that destroys the reputation of good, honest people. Scam sites have quickly become a place to bash other people to benefit the owner and in the end, hard working people who are trying to make a life and career for themselves are victimized.

If you are treating someone this way, I have to ask, are you proud of yourself? Do you really think that this person deserves to be humiliated and flamed on a message board and who are you to decide? Do you really know the amount of damage you are causing to this person?

Sorry but I guess I just do not understand. These people you are flaming are nothing to you. Ewww, and ahhhh and laugh all you want. I bet the one your flaming feels like this animal in a cage. People come back because they want to see the blood, the hurt, and the anger that you are causing to this person. Of course you the baiter, flamer, troll has no problem providing it. No matter how stupid it makes your victim look. It is always the same bull, Innuendo, and baiting, followed by threats of exposure. It is good for the ratings isn’t it? If this were a TV show, you’d be a smash hit.

Trolls are nothing more than cruel people who enjoy hurting others. I’m sorry Trolls but I see you as nothing more than someone who likes to stir the pot and cause trouble by twisting the story and filling it with lies to please yourself. I guess what is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Someone is sure to remind me after reading this article, “Rose Desrochers don’t you feed the Trolls.” So now you know all about trolls. I guess internet trolls are really not any different than the ones that live under the bridge are they?

Make a search engine for your website with PHP

This hands on PHP Programming article provides the knowledge necessary to design and develop a search engine for your website using PHP version 4.0 and above. Making a search engine for your website with PHP is really easy and provides substantial functionality required by most of the small to medium websites. This article introduces every steps of the development, including both design and PHP programming. Basic computer skills and knowledge of HTML fundamentals are required. Ok, let’s begin now.

Step 1: Design Search Box Under your website root, make a file called search.htm or anything you like and type in the following code:

Step 2: Write search.php file. It is the core of your website search engine.

Under your website root, create a file called search.php or anything you like.

//get keywords

$keyword=trim($_POST["keyword"]);

//check if the keyword is empty

if($keyword==”"){

echo”no keywords”;

exit;

}

?>

With above, you can give hints to your users when they forget to enter a keyword. Now let’s go through all the files or articles in your website.

function listFiles($dir){

$handle=opendir($dir);

while(false!==($file=readdir($handle))){

if($file!=”.”&&$file!=”..”){

//if it is a directory, then continue

if(is_dir(”$dir/$file”)){

listFiles(”$dir/$file”);

}

else{

//process the searching here with the following PHP script

}

}

}

}

?>

The following scripts read, process files and check whether the files contain $keyword. If $keyword is found in the file, the file address will be saved in an array-type variable.

function listFiles($dir,$keyword,&$array){

$handle=opendir($dir);

while(false!==($file=readdir($handle))){

if($file!=”.”&&$file!=”..”){

if(is_dir(”$dir/$file”)){

listFiles(”$dir/$file”,$keyword,$array);

}

else{

//read file

$data=fread(fopen(”$dir/$file”,”r”),filesize(”$dir/$file”));

//avoid search search.php itself

if($file!=”search.php”){

//contain keyword?

if(eregi(”$keyword”,$data)){

$array[]=”$dir/$file”;

}

}

}

}

}

}

//define array $array

$array=array();

//execute function

listFiles(”.”,”php”,$array);

//echo/print search results

foreach($array as $value){

echo “$value”.” \n”;

} ?>

Now, combine the programs listed above, you will find all the related results in your websites will be found and listed. A further optimization of the search engine can be taken by adding the following,

1,list the title of all searching results

REPLACE THE FOLLOWING

if(eregi(”$keyword”,$data)){

$array[]=”$dir/$file”;

}

WITH

if(eregi(”$keyword”,$data)){

if(eregi(”(.+)</p> <p>“,$data,$m)){

$title=$m["1"];

}

else{

$title=”no title”;

}

$array[]=”$dir/$file $title”;

}

2,Add links to searching results

CHANGE THE FOLLOWING

foreach($array as $value){

echo “$value”.” \n”;

}

TO

foreach($array as $value){

list($filedir,$title)=split(”[ ]“,$value,”2″);

echo “$value”.” \n”;

}

3 Set time limit for PHP execution

ADD THE FOLLOWING AT THE BEGINNING OF PHP FILES

set_time_limit(”600″);

The above unit is second,so ten minutes is the litmit.

Now, combine all the above programs and get the complete search.php file as following,

set_time_limit(”600″);

$keyword=trim($_POST["keyword"]);

if($keyword==”"){

echo”Please enter your keyword”;

exit; }

function listFiles($dir,$keyword,&$array){

$handle=opendir($dir);

while(false!==($file=readdir($handle))){

if($file!=”.”&&$file!=”..”){

if(is_dir(”$dir/$file”)){

listFiles(”$dir/$file”,$keyword,$array);

}

else{

$data=fread(fopen(”$dir/$file”,”r”),filesize(”$dir/$file”));

if(eregi(”]+)>(.+)“,$data,$b)){

$body=strip_tags($b["2"]);

}

else{

$body=strip_tags($data);

} if($file!=”search.php”){

if(eregi(”$keyword”,$body)){

if(eregi(”“,$data,$m)){

$title=$m["1"];

}

else{

$title=”no title”;

}

$array[]=”$dir/$file $title”;

}

}

}

}

}

}

$array=array();

listFiles(”.”,”$keyword”,$array);

foreach($array as $value){

list($filedir,$title)=split(”[ ]“,$value,”2″);

echo “$title “.” \n”;

} ?>

Now, you have made a search engine for your website, enjoy it!

Who is Involved in Getting a Site Online?

This article could also be titled ‘How much is this going to cost me?’ There are actually several parties you have to pay when having a website designed. I tend to use the analogy of a house, so I’ll run with that analogy here.

First off, you may or may not realize that there are both one-time and recurring fees involved in getting a site online. I will differentiate between the two as I go through the three major parties.

Web Designer

The designer is a combination of an architect, builder and interior designer. And really a number of other things. The designer ends up handling (or helping you handle) everything from the purpose of the website to its organization, layout, design, good coding and plenty of other things that you may or may not see just by looking at the website.

Like a good house, a lot of things, when done well, will not be noticeable. And in a lot of cases, that’s the point. When a menu on a site is well designed, you really just use it without paying too much attention to its exact location, font, design, etc.

With a web designer, there is definitely an up-front cost. This is the design of the initial site. This fee can run anywhere from $300 or so to thousands and thousands of dollars. It all depends on the size and complexity of the site. If you want a lot of custom programming or Flash work, that type of thing will obviously cost you more. In the long run, however, many of these elements like the custom programming can save you money.

There is also the ongoing cost of maintaining the site. At T&S, you sign a contract for several (generally 6 or 12) months at a time, and pay up front. You know the cost ahead of time. Many web designers charge hourly for this type of work. The downside is that you don’t know how much you will be charged in a month. The upside is that if you don’t have any work done at all in a month, you don’t get charged for that month.

Because of anti-price-fixing laws, many web designers do not put prices on their website. So you would need to contact a given designer for an actual estimate.

Web Hosting

This can also be called ‘Web Space,’ among other things. This is a combination of the land and foundation your house is on. A good designer will help you pick a hosting company and package that will fit your wants and needs for your website.

Some web hosts do charge an initial setup fee of anywhere from $20 to $75 or so dollars. The bigger the package you get, the more the initial setup fee is likely to be.

Not all web hosts charge a setup fee. You will, however, be required to pay an ongoing fee. If you keep in mind that what you’re actually doing is renting space on someone’s computer, this makes a little more sense. The ongoing fees for this range from around $5 a month to $600+ a month. Most of m clients end up paying in the $10-$30 per month range.

Domain Registrar

Imagine that you had to pay the post office yearly for your address. Sure, someone could find you if you gave them your longitude and latitude, but having a street address makes it much, much easier.

That is how it works with a domain name. You pay a domain registrar, and they generally charge you based on the extension. An extension is .com, .org, .net, .edu and the list goes on.

One domain registrar we’ve had good experiences with is Go Daddy. Their domains generally run from $7 to $10 a year. As I write this, .tv is really popular, so it’s quite a bit more expensive. Still, at $31 a year, it’s way cheaper than domain names used to run. In the late 90’s, you had to pay $70 or so a year for a domain.

The charge for a domain registrar is yearly, though you can generally buy up to 10 years at a time. We’ve only had one client buy that many, but we’ve had another client buy 11 domain names in addition to the other one they already owned.

And there you go.

Why Is No-one Buying From My Website?

Are you, like many other website owners, frustrated at the amount of time, effort and money you’ve put into your website, only to see few or no sales?

Like most business owners, you probably know your products or services inside out; you know the benefits of them, and what they can give to other businesses or consumers. And you probably paid good money for a website to promote them. You may even be getting hundreds of visitors a day to your website, but if this isn’t converting into sales, what’s going wrong?

Here are seven tips to help you attract BUYERS to your website, not just visitors.

1) Have a clear purpose

We all visit websites that leave us a little confused about what the business owning them actually “does”. Is your website like this?

Statistics show that you have only 10 seconds to impress your potential customer - if they spend those 10 seconds with furrowed brow, trying to work out if you provide the product or service that they need, you’ll lose them.

Action point : Make a list of the things you want to sell from your website, from the most important to the least. Does your website show this?

2) Make your home page copy sparkle

It’s all very well telling your visitor how great your product or service is, but everyone wants to know What’s In It For Me? Use headlines and bullet points to tell your reader how your products will benefit them.

Action point: Rewrite your home page copy to sell your products or services from the visitor’s point of view, not yours .

3) Use testimonials

If you’ve supplied your products or services to happy customers, then include a testimonial on your website. If your business is local, and the person is well known, even better! If you can get multiple testimonials, include them on each page of the site, so your visitors read great things that your clients say every step of the way.

Action point: Email your top 10 clients and ask them for a testimonial - then put it on your website with a link back to theirs.

4) Keep your layout consistent

Make sure every page of your site is laid out in the same way. If the text on one page is centred, when all of the others are right justified, it makes your site look unprofessional.

Action point - check every page of your site has a consistent layout

5) Use colours and fonts for emphasis

Be sure that your site is easy to read - a local business site I visited recently had maroon coloured text on a navy blue background - NOT professional and NOT legible. Use different colours and fonts by all means, but sparingly and for emphasis, not everywhere.

Action point : check your site to see if it is definitely legible - and be honest!

6) Become a BUYER

Use your site as a visitor would - is it easy to find the information you need? Is the path from the front page to the order or enquiry form obvious? Are your contact details obvious? Sometimes it’s easy to miss out important things - visiting your site as a buyer, not the owner, helps you to see what’s wrong, and then fix it.

Action point : Visit your website once a month and go through the buying or enquiry process.

7) Ask others

At NikkiPilkington.com we have a great service that allows you to have 100 people visit your site and then make comments on it. They’ll tell you what they liked about the design, how they rated the content, what put them off, what turned them on, and whether your site would convince them to buy your product or service.

For just £50 we’ll send details of your site to 100 people that have an interest in your industry or product, and collate all of the findings into a report after ten days. The report will be delivered to you by email, along with the email addresses of any visitors that wanted to find out more.

Recent comments from our reviewers include: “Would have liked to have ordered, but link to order form didn’t work”, “Spelling errors make site look amateurish”, “Great site, have added to my favourites”, “No contact details anywhere on site makes me wary of buying from this company”.

Action point: email Nikki at nikki@nikkipilkington.com to request your research campaign or to find out more, then act on the results.

Types of Web Site Features

As web platforms and software grow at exponential rates, site owners are faced with a plethora of potential features. So, what is out there?

Web site features are limited only by imagination. Here is a brief categorization of some of the major fields of web site features, including stores, auctions, forums, articles, directories, news, and entertainment.

Stores

Online stores can be used to sell products on web sites and also easily interact as a point of sale service.

Catalogs

Catalog type ecommerce sites provide listings of categorized products that can be purchased for a fixed amount. Usually a shopping cart is employed which allows visitors to select multiple items for purchase.

Auctions

Auctions like EBay allow visitors to bid on items, whereas the highest bidder wins. These auctions have a time limit and also sometimes have a buy now button. A buy now button is a button that allows a bidder to end the auction and guarantee purchase by paying a set fixed price.

Forums

Forums are message boards that allow your visitors to post messages on your web site and interact with other visitors. An advantage of forums is that can they can bring visitors back to your site time and time again to post and follow conversations. If done correctly, forums can also provide large amounts of content for search engines to spider. The down side of forums is that they can make your site look bad if no one is using them, and it can be tricky to get people to use them. Also, it is wise to have forums moderated so that people play nice and don’t trash talk your own site.

Articles

Articles are a concise way to convey information and provide a reason for web surfers to come to your site. In addition to providing a valuable resource to your web visitors, articles also provide content for search engine bots to spider. Adding articles to a site is essential in many SEO strategies.

Directories

Directories categorize other web sites, businesses or just about anything. Some directories are huge, like Yahoo!, while others may be very small and specific only to a small target audience. Smaller directories can often be quite useful to web visitors, particularly if the directory includes editor reviews, ratings and/or recommendations.

News

News sites generally have articles on current events. They are generally updated often and have search functions by which archives can be retrieved. An advantage of a news site is that often audiences return daily. A disadvantage is the need to constantly update the site.

Entertainment

Video - Video can be delivered over the Internet in a variety of ways. Some of the most popular methods are Flash, Windows Media Player, and Quick Time, though there are many others. Short clips are generally broadcast over the Internet due to bandwidth restrictions, yet as broadband penetration continues to increase more and more sites are broadcasting full-length shows and movies.

Music - Like video, music can be broadcast in a variety of forms. Many band sites are now allowing downloads of their songs in MP3 format or samples. This can be a huge promotional tool.

Games - The Internet has provided gamers a huge variety of options. Games can cost any where from free, to pay as you go, to a one time payment to subscription fees. Game sites often have loyal followings that come back time and time again, making the audience prime for advertising.

E-Print - Stories, blogs and articles are all ways people use web sites to share their ideas with written word. Many sites provide downloads of printable posters, petitions or coupons, blurring the line between print and Internet.

Many sites will utilize many of these different web site features to create powerful and complete media experiences. Many businesses have yet to fully explore the possibilities of their web sites and the Internet. As television, print and radio collide, the Internet’s role in business, information and entertainment will only increase. By using different types of web site features, many web sites will gain huge advantages over their competition.

Why is Optimizing Your Site For Speed is Important? Tips on How to Do So!

If there is one thing we have all suffered through is waiting for a site to download online. It seems like it is the worse thing in the world and will never end. We actually either click off of the site or after the initial download of the frontpage completes, we then click off of the site because the subpages take too long to load. We have all been here and this article is to help make sure your visitors don’t go through it as well.

The reason why a websites speed of download is important is actually very simple and we have broken it down into two parts:

-The first part is that people want to get to where they are going quickly. This is pretty straight forward and now a days no one seems to have the time to wait for a site to download(no matter how important it is).

-The second part is to deliver the content to the user as quick as possible so that we can keep them interested and entertained. The quicker they can get to the information the more they will click around your site and the more they will interact with your website. This is extremely important if your website has it’s own estore, as the more products your visitors are able to view then the more time they spend in your store and the better the chance you have of them purchasing something off of you. Pretty simple and straight forward.

Now you may be wondering how you can take your current design or your re-design and improve the performance of your website so it doesn’t take forever for it to download. The truth is that it isn’t too complex and actually anyone can follow these steps. Here are some tips on how to get your website to load faster and why these factors may cause long load times:

1. Tip one is to use regular html text instead of graphic text(such as exporting text from a program like fireworks or photoshop). The reason for this is that html text carries alot smaller kbs size when added to website design. So anywhere that you use regular text instead of “graphical text” will really help decrease your page size making the download time quicker for each user.

2. Tip two is to limit other graphics uses on your website where you can. Some things such as using a graphic for your logo can not be avoided but try to make an effort to limit the amount of graphics on each page. The more graphics you use the higher your page size will be and the more time it takes to download it. Really graphic intensive websites can have users waiting a while for everything to download. Some occasions where it might be ok to use graphics is if they will also be used on subpages. These graphics will already be cached on your visitors computers and will not have to be downloaded again when a person visits your subpages.

3. Tip three is to limit the use of flash. It can make your page take even longer to load as the kbs size of each file are usually quite larger then any graphics on your website. This can really increase download times and in alot of cases is not necessary.

4. The final tip is to try not to nest tables inside of each other. Try to break down your design and use multiple tables. This way each table will load separately giving your visitors something to view while the rest of your site loads. If you load everything into one table then they will have to wait for the whole main table to load.

Remember the key is to get your users to the information as fast as possible. If you follow this advice and apply these rules to your site, then there is nothing saying you can’t have a quick loading and great looking website as well.
