Poker Commentary: Does it Help?

If you watch online poker on the television, then it is generally assumed that you have a rough knowledge of the game. Given this fact, and the fact that you can see all of the player’s cards through the hole cam, why is it that the shows provide commentary? Some feel that the commentary is a distraction from the game and for this reason decry the constant chatter as the downfall of pure poker. While they are free to this opinion, the fact remains that online poker commentary is designed to help the home audience to understand the action.

The poker commentary allows players to understand moves that may have taken place when the camera was away or when television coverage was not seen. They are meant to provide all of the knowledge necessary for an audience member to feel like they are actually in the game. For the beginning player commentary can be particularly useful as it provides explanations for why players acted the way they did. If you are a new poker player, it is far more helpful for someone to explain why a move did not work when you can see it than to look up the same explanation in a dusty guidebook. Commentary makes the televised poker experience more palpable to the audience at home by rendering it more approachable. It is eminently helpful to the viewer who is not there to see everything themselves. You can then apply what you learn at a casino online.
