Regularly Check Smoke Alarms, Fireman Urges

It is important that home emergency cover insurance customers regularly check the batteries in their smoke alarms, a fireman has asserted.Speaking to the Doncaster Free Press, crew manager Chris Gillmore made his comments after a house was set ablaze following a grill pan fire. The residents had put the batteries in the smoke alarm the wrong way round and as such it did not work. The couple and their son escaped after the woman spotted flames and called her husband, who was up in the loft at the time.Mr Gillmore told the publication it was lucky the fire was caught in its early stages, or it could have become “much more serious”.”It is very important that residents regularly check the batteries in their smoke alarms to ensure they are in full working order,” he added. Charitable organisation Shelter England states homes should be fitted with at least one smoke alarm. As well as making people aware of fires, smoke alarms could well provide a means of limiting the amount of damage a blaze can cause, which could reduce the size of a home insurance claim. A smoke alarm should be fitted on every floor of a property, according to the government’s Fire Kills campaign.
